Our Take

Angkan is the rare brand built twice: once as apprentices learning what world-class coffee looks like, and once as founders building what Filipino coffee can be. The fact that it took a Kyoto coffee shop to spark it, and a franchise expiry to release it, makes the origin story more compelling, not less.

They Left Kyoto With an Idea. They Left a Franchise With a Mission.

Rosalinda and her daughter Allue discovered their love of coffee the way the best things are found — while traveling, unhurried, in a city that takes its coffee seriously. As regulars at a Kyoto coffee shop, they fell into conversation with the Japanese owners. Those conversations eventually became an opportunity: bring the concept to the Philippines. In 2017, they opened their first location under a franchise arrangement, eventually growing to three Manila outposts.

When that franchise contract ended in 2021, they faced a choice. They could seek another arrangement. Or they could build something of their own. They chose the harder path. On March 27, 2022, they launched ANGKAN — the Tagalog word for family — as a proudly Filipino specialty coffee brand, rooted in Philippine beans, designed to celebrate the country’s emerging coffee culture on its own terms.

The brand’s range spans blends, Philippine single-origin, and internationally sourced beans, all expertly handpicked and freshly roasted. Brew bars staffed by skilled baristas anchor each location, and cupping sessions invite customers into the story behind every cup. By 2025, ANGKAN had grown to five locations across Manila, including a flagship at Imperium Capitol Commons, opened in October 2023.

The cultural dimension runs deeper than the cup. ANGKAN has collaborated with Rags2Riches, the Filipino social enterprise known for weaving indigenous craft into contemporary design, on heritage-inspired merchandise. It is a brand that understands coffee as a gathering place, something the name has always meant.

Why We Featured Them

What Makes Angkan Different

01

Built Twice, on Purpose

Rosalinda and Allue spent years running a successful international coffee franchise in Manila. When the contract ended, they didn’t renew. They launched their own Filipino brand instead. That choice required giving up a proven model to build something with a soul.

02

Championing Philippine Coffee

ANGKAN’s menu centers on Philippine single-origin beans alongside carefully sourced international selections, putting local farmers and Filipino terroir at the heart of a specialty coffee experience that can stand alongside any café in the world.

03

A Name That Means Everything

ANGKAN means “family” in Filipino. It’s the brand’s founding principle, its operating philosophy, and the reason a mother and daughter chose to build something together.
